"Emergence" 10x14, Scratchboard 2024

Emergence is a meaningful piece for me. It came out of a period in my life when I was really struggling and I needed to build myself back up again. It represents courage in the face of uncertainty.
I chose the medium, scratchboard, purposefully. It is a time-consuming and meditative process for me, which was fitting for the therapeutic period I was in. A scratchboard begins completely black. And when I started this project, I was in a pitch black pit and I didn’t know where I was going or how to get out. At a certain point, though, I had to make the decision to change. That choice, like the first mark made on my scratchboard, brought light into my darkness. From there, I had to keep doing the hard work of facing myself and extracting lessons from my mistakes. With time and support, my life started to take form and throughout this personal journey I had my scratchboard project to keep me grounded. Now, I trust that no matter what happens I will face it with courage.
